Graceland – Chicago’s most historic cemetery
Graceland – Chicago’s most historic cemetery
1
Walking through Graceland Cemetery and reading the names on the monuments is like
reading a book on Chicago’s history, as well as, like viewing an index of Chicago street
names – there are more notable and wealthy people interred here than in any other
Chicagoland cemetery! But it’s not only Chicago history, because many of those buried
here are also famous around the world.
And, of course, there are people buried here who are known only to their descendants;
and I’m sure many who have been forgotten by all.
I certainly couldn’t cover ALL of them, but I have walked the lanes of this cemetery many
times, and I include those that interested me in one way or another. So this is my
personal tour through Graceland Cemetery.
Graceland Cemetery has hundreds of large
monuments and scores of tombs. I'll start
with some examples of typical monuments
and tombs you would see if you visited.
For the sake of accuracy, I must note that throughout the web site the photos make the monument
look smaller than they actually are--there weren't any people around to provide them with scale.
By the way, it is called “Graceland” simply because its
entrance was on Graceland Road. That road name was
changed long ago, and is now Irving Park Road.
