Comparison shots of the big rain day, 28 February 2011

I found some fascination in going out in the rain and shooting photos of our little brook when it was over its banks to the greatest extent that I’d ever seen it on February 28th. Then a few days later, when most of the water had receded,

I thought it might be interesting to go out and shoot the same views, as nearly as I could remember them, and create this little web site of comparison shots.

Even the amount of water still running in the brook is quite a bit more than is usual, since it’s just a drainage channel with no permanent source feeding it, and no tributaries entering it. During the dry summer months it is often bone dry.

The first view is the small culvert under the drive – I think it best to first show what it looks like normally – this

is a photo just two days after the big rain, so you get the idea; the water is still flowing, but is just a trickle. The

water comes from the overflow of the ponds higher up the slope, and flows through the cattle field next door. This little ditch is the only “input” channel that feeds our pond.

And this is how it looked during the rain...

View from the driveway toward the pond.

On the other side of the pond is the only “outlet” channel that drains away the pond’s overflow into the brook.

On the day of the heavy

rain, the outlet couldn’t

keep up with the overflow

and the pond topped the

earthen dam.
