In the Spring of 2009, Canada Geese (Branta Canadensis) were nesting near every small pond in the

vicinity. After the hatchlings emerged from their eggs, the local foxes and coyotes were reducing their

numbers every night. But the pair of Canada Geese that nested at our pond were completely successful in

raising their family: 7 eggs; 7 goslings, and they never lost one.

The parents got the chicks in the water very
soon after they hatched. This is the family’s
paddle in the evening of the day of the hatching,
May 6, 2009.
The nest a day or two after
the eggs were laid - 9APR09.

The goslings didn’t show much growth at first. The shots above and below show them at 2 weeks old.

But they sprouted in the second two weeks. This photo is the last one I

got before the family traveled on

when the goslings were 4 weeks old.

I don’t know where they went...the

little ones were much too young to

fly...but they left the pond and

never returned.

Canada Geese land on the pond every

year, but none have nested since the

ones in 2009. I thought that this pair

in 2012 might stay, but they just

paddled around for a couple hours

and then flew off.
