The males are boldly slate colored with white bellies. There is significant variation in the darkness of the gray (or “grey” as is the more common spelling in England), with some of them
appearing very nearly black, particularly when
they are seen against the background of snow.
The females are more softly colored, with tinges of brown, like the one just below.
