The White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis) is another of my year-round neighbors.

They are one of the species that never stops to eat the seeds at the feeders. The always fly in,

find a seed to their liking (and at times can be very choosey), and then fly off with their booty.

They are most comfortable head-downward. I had to really search

to find the photo below of a bird that was close to horizontal.

    Nuthatches are pretty birds, and fun to

watch. The only difference between the sexes

is that the males have black caps, and, as you

see below, the female caps are grey.

I thought it was about time to include another of my feeder-meeting photos. These three guys

very happily shared the grub on November 7, 2007. This was one of my homemade feeders: just

a big dish that you would put under a big flower pot, suspended from a rod poked through the

middle. The birds enjoyed using this type feeder. Left to right: a titmouse, chickadee and goldfinch.
