The Pine Warbler (Dendroica pinus) spotted here on February 2, 2007, is
a bird that I rarely see. The two shots here were taken a full year apart.

In February 2008, on the exact same feeder, a Pine Warbler joined a male
Downy Woodpecker. I love this shot; the two birds look as though they have
taken their seats and are now listening to a lecture.
It’s funny how certain birds don’t show up
for years, and then I make some little
change to my feeders and there they are!
I lived here for seven years and never
had a Field Sparrow (Spizella pusilla) visit
my feeders. Then one day in 2012, I
decided to throw together a feeder for
my front porch, where I’ve never before
had a feeder, and Field Sparrows made it
a regular stop.

“Sparrows and Other
Ground Feeders” section.
These sparrows are similar
to the Chipping Sparrows
on the next page, but are
a little larger with a longer
tail, less noticeable facial
markings, and with a very
distinctive pink bill.
