Everyone with a pond will have visits from the

Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodius) like this one

stalking fish on July 22, 2012. I see them year

round, but they are very hard to approach.

Usually, if they see me even just come out on

my porch 200 feet away they fly off.


I had to hide beneath a camouflage cloth and

crawl that 200 feet across the meadow in order

to get close enough to take these photos. It was

an extremely hot day which is why all the shots

show the bird with its bill open as it constantly

panted in an attempt to stay cool...imagine how

hot it was for me, crawling out there under a

camo cloth!

The skittishness of the Great Blue Heron is why the two shots below are so unusual. They were taken by

my brother-in-law, Don. He said that he walked right up to the bird, expecting every second that it was

going to fly off. But the heron let him get very near and able to shoot these close-ups. I’m supposing that

the bird was sick and simply incapable of behaving normally, but whatever the reason, we are luckier for it

in having these shots.
